Packing up and heading to the slopes for the winter to work, ski and party requires some foresight. According to Max Isaacs, a six-year "veteran" of Thredbo, there's an "amazing" lifestyle at the snow, but it's important to plan ahead.  "Some people don't realise how much it costs to live up here and how hard it
is to find accommodation during the ski season," he says. "If it is your first season and you haven't planned, you'll blow money so easily. You won't save a thing."

Some of these positions may give you a chance of snapping up employment opportunities elsewhere in the World especially US, for example during Australia's off-season. The major resorts, such as Thredbo and Perisher Blue, have reciprocal agreements with ski villages around the world.  "The US has real trouble filling its front-line positions so it means our staff get the opportunity to earn US dollars and get more experience, which is great," says Maureen Roberts, the personnel manager at Thredbo.

Hours range from 25 to 40 a week. "It is a real job," says Roberts and often people can have unrealistic expectations of how much free time they will have to ski or snowboard. "People come down here to play, but if people are playing all the time ... you couldn't live in the Snowies if you don't do at least 25 hours a week."  For those who do want to ski or snowboard all day, bar or restaurant work at night is ideal.

Note from River Inn: We advise staff to have at least $1,000 saved, you should have extra money  to guard against a slow start to the season. If it dumps there is plenty of work for everyone, but if the snow is no good, we might not have as many  hours to offer, so you need cash to fall back on.  Work is snow-dependent and there is no defined start or end date. If you  have been hired, be ready to leave immediately for the mountains if there  are heavy snow falls early, as there were a few years ago. Conversely, if the snow  holds off you may not be required for weeks after the start of the season.
